New Construction Estimating Jobs
Often, those who fill these jobs will have a background in the field, perhaps initially in an entry level laborer or tradesman career and frequently as a superintendent. Other times, experience may be gained for this employment in an assistant position. Sometimes training is provided through college programs or trade schools that specialize in training for the construction industry including estimator careers.
In order to be successful at this employment, a wide ranging knowledge of the industry is very helpful. Not only is an understanding of how the project will go together and what order is necessary, but most importantly is a thorough understanding of what the bid components are. Subcontractor relationships are also invaluable. Good math skills are a necessity.
A career in this industry is always subject to a few ups and downs as the economy changes. The good news is that there is a wide variety of needs for professionals to fill this position. From residential to commercial, medical, educational, military and heavy highway contracting companies, they will all need someone to fill the top construction estimator jobs.
